It’s scary being lost; the feeling of vulnerability and helplessness starts to sink in and grow the longer it lasts. It doesn’t just have to be a physical state though, not everyone that is lost is stranded out in the woods or on a desert island. Being mentally lost can be just as stressful. Maybe you can’t remember where you put your cell phone, or can’t figure out the answer to a question, whatever it may be we have all been there before and it is never fun. Even though we might not know where we need to go, you only start to feel lost once you realize that you aren’t where you are supposed to be.

Is it possible to be lost and not know it? Does it actually matter where you are supposed to be if you think you are in the right place? If a 3-year-old boy wanders away while his parents aren’t looking, is he actually lost? In his mind no; he might just be oblivious to where he is supposed to be. But in his parents’ mind that little boy is lost and in desperate need to be found.

It’s one thing to be lost, but to be lost and not even know it is probably the scariest position that we can put ourselves in. But some of us are living our lives like this. As children of God we have wandered away from our Heavenly Father. Our sin has separated us from Him, and He is desperately trying to bring us back to Him. Like the child wandering away from his parents, we can be totally oblivious to our lost state and our own helplessness.

Just because we don’t realize that we aren’t where we are supposed to be doesn’t mean that God isn’t passionately searching for us. God’s Word says that whoever believes in His Son Jesus is forgiven of their sin and can now be brought back to their Heavenly Father.

Time after time we try to find ourselves with worldly things. We think that if we can have enough money, success, fame, that we can be satisfied and we can be complete. The truth is though that God created us for Him; trying to find our joy in possessions or experiences will only leave us with an unquenchable thirst for more. When we accept our spiritual lost state, that’s when we can truly be found by the perfect Love of Christ.

God, thank you for loving me, thank you for wanting me, thank you for your son Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for me. I have wandered away from you, Lord, and I want you to draw me back to you. I ask that you could forgive me of my sins and of the areas in my life where I fail you. Thank you for your never ending grace and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
